JOSÉ CARLOS G. AGUIAR

Short bio

Aguiar was born in Guadalajara (Mexico), where he grew up. He holds a tenured position as Assistant Professor at Leiden University (the Netherlands). Aguiar has lectured in universities and institutes in Europe, Latin America and the United States, and published internationally for over a decade.

In 2015 he spent a semester as a visiting researcher at the Centre for Sociological Studies at Colegio de México, Mexico City. In 2012 he conducted research as a visiting fellow at the Free University of Berlin. From 2007-2009 Aguiar worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Latin American Research and Documentation CEDLA in Amsterdam. In 2007 he received a Ph.D. degree in social sciences at the University of Amsterdam. He obtained a MA in Social Sciences (2001) at the University of Amsterdam. Prior to that, Aguiar completed his BA in Communication Sciences (1997) at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente Iteso in Guadalajara; he was then distinguished as an excellence student.

Next to academic life, Aguiar is a trained photographer, and writes a column for the news website Aristegui Noticias. He is involved in a number of cultural projects in Mexico and the Netherlands.
